
Tourist going to the marvelous city of Vienna cannot miss the opportunity to visit the exact center of the city, Innere stadt. This is the old Vienna town which is also it very first municipal district. “Inner City” as roughly translated in English, this district was what people once called Vienna before the city stretched out its territory in the year 1850. The traditional divisions of the district are selected from the most significant gates of the old town. These are Schottenviertel from the northwest, Stubenviertel from the northeast, Widmerviertel from the southwest, and Kärntner Viertel from the southeast. The other district that touches the edge of Innere stadt territory are Leopoldstadt, Neubau, Landstrasse, Josefstadt, and Alsergrund.
The city is encircled by the Ringstrasse, an old road that replaced the ancient city walls. During the 13th century, the city wall was built up in order to protect the town from the Turks who first attacked the city during 1529. The old walls slowed down the traffic and were thus demolished along with the moats by Emperor Franz Joseph the first. The ring road of the Ringstrasse is a primary city attraction and various beautiful buildings and fabulous mansions were built there by noblemen and the bourgeoisie who wanted to showcase their wealth. It is said that Sigmund Feud used to take regular walks around the Ringstrasse.
Innere stadt is one of the best tourist spots in Vienna and consequently gets a lot of business from this market. It has one of the largest work force populations in Vienna also because there are many corporation that have base of operations in the city due to its prime location in the heart of the city.
